About our society

We combat poaching and protect the wildlife of Zimbabwe. Join us!

The Hwange Conservation Society was established in 1992 to help protect the wildlife and environs of the Hwange National Park - Wankie as it used to be known in Zimbabwe, formely Rhodesia. It is a fully registered British based charity ,No. 1036153 and is run on a complete voluntary basis therefore all monies raised go direct to help the park and we channel all money through totally reliable contacts in Zimbabwe or send equipment and other donations out with friends or members which saves on transport or postage costs. Some of our projects and donations include the following:

  • Sponsorship of research into Wild dog populations.
  • Donation of money to provide piping for water supplies for game.
  • Video camera and tracking receiver to assist in a Hyaena research.
  • Donation of a second-hand Land-Rover to a school to enable the pupils to visit the park and learn about conservation work
  • Provision of vehicle maintenance training for National Parks employee, including provision of tools, overalls and help with living costs during training.
  • Establishment of an anti-snaring/poaching project by donating a dart-rifle, range-finder, immobilising drugs and wages of an anti-poaching scout.
  • Regular donations of used school books for the local schools.
  • Medical supplies to the clinics within the park.
  • Donation of night-vision binoculars for carnivore research.

Almost all the donations of equipment are made on the basis that they are on loan for the research programme and at the end of any programme the society has the right to use them on any other selected programme.

Although based in the UK. The Hwange Conservation Society-UK has membership on a worldwide basis and many of our members have visited the park during holidays in Africa. Our source of income is from membership fees, donations, collections and sale of various home made produce and crafts.
We have no offices to pay for and almost no overheads except a small amount for postage. We send out a newsletter every two months to our members and the newsletter consists of information on the park, reports and photographs from various projects being carried out in the park and general news on the Society. We are always looking for new members to help us in our struggle to support the wildlife and the park so why not join us and help this wonderful part of wild Africa.
