Welcome!

Hwange Conservation Society was established as a UK charity in 1992 to help protect the wildlife of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe.

We are a UK based registered charity (No 1036153) and run purely on a voluntary basis which means all monies raised goes directly to help the park as we have no overheads to pay such as rent, wages, insurance etc.

Our aim is to support the National park and its environs by raising funds which are used to help protect the wildlife and support the surrounding community with such things as medical supplies, and school equipment.

Organisations we work closely with include Wildlife and National Parks Authority of Zimbabwe, Wildlife and Environment Zimbabwe a local Zimbabwean charity and SAVE Foundation of Australia. We also work closely with organisations such as Kent Scout group who aid and assist with some of the larger projects we are often involved in.

About the park

Our main focus over recent years has been to concentrate on drinking water supplies for the animals. Due to the drought conditions experienced within the park each year its necessary to ensure water is pumped 24 hours 7 days a week into the waterholes.

To this end we supply a range of equipment including recently thirty diesel engines, spare parts, pipes, overalls and fuel. We also supply items such as Ex army shirts, trousers & boots for anti poaching units use.

Several years ago, we paid for an employee of National Parks to be trained as a mechanic – now Owen Mangwana is in charge of the Game Water Supply Unit for the entire Park and is considered to be doing a great job for the animals – so it was money well spent.

In March 2010 we built the garden for the school and the first year has been a very good success and we hope for even better in 2011.

In December 2010 Owen requested some new tools for his work on Game Water supply Unit and we were able to purchase them in Bulawayo. These are pipe wrenches and a heavy duty bench vice. Owen also requested some spare parts for the diesel engines at the pans. We were able to obtain pistons, piston rings, gaskets etc. and Owen now has these and is busy getting all the diesel engines checked and refurbished for the coming dry season.

About our society

Hwange Conservation Society was established as a UK charity in 1992 to help protect the wildlife of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe.

Among our many projects are the following :

  • Provision of dart rifles, range finders and immobilising drugs used for darting & capturing snared and injured animals.
  • Digital camcorders which are used for elephant & hyena research projects.
  • Night Vision goggles used for research work.
  • Donation of a second hand Land Rover to Petra High School in Bulawayo used for taking pupils to Hwange National Park for conservation education.
  • Paying schools fees for children at the Main Camp primary school together with donation of books and stationary

To date, we have raised in the region of £70,000 for our various projects, over £33,000 of which has been spent on the waterholes and water supply work. We hope to continue with our support for the water supply and would ask anyone who can help us to contact us at any of the addresses below

As well as our support from British Airways, we gratefully acknowledge the help and support we receive from DHL Express and Servicepoint in the UK, as well as Airlink Cargo in South Africa who take our donations from British Airways flights landing in Johannesburg up to Bulawayo free of charge.
